The University Malaya's visionary leaders shaped Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zaliha Omar's Rehabilitation Medicine career to provide holistic patient care. Twenty-five years of academic capacity building began in 1980 - a handful of allied health professionals and a rapidly increasing number of patients. It focused on an inter-multi-transdisciplinary approach, condition-specific rehabilitation, and technology. In preparation for the Commonwealth Games 1998, the Master of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation postgraduate training was started, and a team served in the games. In 1997, the new Master of Rehabilitation Medicine engaged in international collaboration; Malaysians can now access nationwide rehabilitation medicine services. After retirement from University Malaya in 2005, she served nationally in the National Specialist Registry, interministerial work for rehabilitation, people with disabilities, and the older population; internationally through ISPRM, Asia Dysphagia Society, ARMA, ACRM, AAP, etc. Lifelong education has helped she earn the DMR (RCP Lond), AFFARM, FRCP (Glasg), and FAMM and she is doing a PhD from Fujita Health University Japan. Her passions are leadership in Medicine, community, Nature-based, and Geriatric rehabilitation. In 2024, she was accorded the International Council for Caring Communities Humanities Award and the Herman Flax Lifetime Achievement Award.

Prof. Dr. Jagannatha Sahoo is the Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. He completed his medical graduation at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Odisha, India, in 2000, followed by a Master's degree in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from SVNIRTAR, India, in 2006. He later obtained a second Master's degree in Orthopaedics in 2010 from the National Board of Examination at BIRRD(T) Hospital, Andhra Pradesh, India. With over 13 years of experience at SVNIRTAR, he has served as a Medical Officer, Training Coordinator, and Centre In-charge of various subcentres, actively contributing to multiple distribution and surgical camps across India. Dr Chua, Sui Geok Karen is senior consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre leading the Acquired Brain Injury rehabilitation programme. She obtained her clinical fellowship in Brain Injury Rehabilitation from Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, USA in 1998. Her research grants, awards and interests are in traumatic brain injury and stroke clinical outcomes, rehabilitation robotics, telerehabilitation, brain computer interface and sarcopaenia. She is a practicing certified medical acupuncturist for 25 years. Since 2024, she is the director of the Institute of Rehabilitation Excellence (IREx), co-director of the Rehabilitation Research Institute of Singapore (RRIS) and Vice-Chair (research and innovation) for the Rehabilitation Health academic clinical programme. She was awarded the National Healthcare Group (NHG) outstanding citizen award (2012), NHG Research and Innovation team award (2021) and NHG Mentor of the year award (2023). She has a passion and drive for clinical integration of rehabilitation technologies in practice and multi-collaborations.

She completed her sub-specialty training in 2021 and ever since, has been working as an Intensivist in Hospital Sungai Buloh, Selangor. She approaches her medical practice in a holistic manner, focusing on overall wellness, rather than just the biological medical needs. Dr KC is an avid believer in biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to the compassionate care of the critically ill, and hopes that her patients do not just survive but they are able to survive well. Dr. Khairiah Mohd Yatim is the Rehabilitation Medicine Physician and Head of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar Seremban (HTJS) in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Her previous position was as the Head of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Hospital Melaka in Malaysia. She is a Medical Doctor from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Master in Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Malaya. Her professional journey commenced in 1996 as a House Officer at Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru. Subsequently, she served at Hospital Temenggung Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim Kulai and Hospital Kajang before enrolling in the Rehabilitation Medicine program at UMMC in 2000. Dr. Khairiah furthered her education by completing training in Neuromedical Rehabilitation at Tung Wah Hospital in Hong Kong and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 2009, she has been conducting FEES procedures on post-stroke patients with dysphagia at HTJS, where she is a trained endoscopist. In the field of Dysphagia Rehabilitation, in particular, she has achieved three significant accomplishments over the course of her 28-year career at the Ministry of Health, Malaysia: 1. The first to undertake the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing (FEES) procedure in the Rehabilitation Medicine Fraternity, Ministry of Health, Malaysia 2. The inaugural individual selected to oversee strategic planning in Malaysia Special Interest Group for Dysphagia Rehabilitation of the Association of Rehabilitation Medicine Physicians (MARP) 3. Li-Wei Chou, M.D., PhD, is currently a professor and director of the Department of Physical Therapy and Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Science, China Medical University (CMU), and a clinical visiting staff at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) in CMU Hospital and Asia University Hospital. He received his M.D. degree from CMU in 1996 and got both doctor and Chinese doctor’s licenses. From 1998 to 2002, He completed his residency training and passed the National Board examination of PM&R in 2002. Since 2007, he learned about myofascial pain from Prof. Chang-Zern Hong, whose major achievement in research includes the pathophysiology of myofascial trigger point (MTrP), therapeutic approach to treat MTrP, and MTrP injection technique. Up to now, he has published more than 170 peer-reviewed academic papers and 12 book chapters. Half of them are related to MTrPs. Currently, he continues to clarify the MTrP mechanism further and develop effective ways for MTrP therapy.

He is a WHO Fellow, a Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS), and holds a Master’s degree from the National Board of Examinations (NBE). He has served as one of the nodal officers promoting the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in India. He is an active member of numerous esteemed professional organizations, including the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), International Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM), World Federation of NeuroRehabilitation (WFNR), and the Indian Association of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (IAPMR), among others. Dr Soo Chin Chan

Dr. Chan Soo Chin is a Rehabilitation Medicine specialist and lecturer at the Universiti Malaya. She obtained her medical degree in 2007 and completed her postgraduate training at the Universiti Malaya. Her clinical and academic interests include neuromedical, musculoskeletal, and pulmonary rehabilitation, with a focus on improving care for people with chronic respiratory diseases. Dr. Chan is currently pursuing a PhD in Global Health at the University of Edinburgh, where her research focuses on mapping and strengthening pulmonary rehabilitation services across Asia, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. She serves as an expert panel member for the World Health Organization (WHO) in developing the rehabilitation framework for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and collaborates with institutions across Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and the University of Edinburgh in efforts to improve access and equity in pulmonary rehabilitation services. Dr. Wen-Chung Tsai currently serves as the President of the Taiwan Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (TAPMR) and holds the position of Vice-Superintendent in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. His clinical specialties include sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and rehabilitation for musculoskeletal disorders. His research focuses on the application of stem cells and exosomes in treating sports-related musculoskeletal injuries, with a particular emphasis on basic research. For years, he has led the comprehensive sports care team at the North Branch of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. This multidisciplinary team, comprising physiatrists, orthopedists, therapists, trainers, pharmacists, nutritionists, and psychologists, provides comprehensive care for both elite and grassroots athletes. As President of TAPMR, Dr. Tsai is dedicated to advancing the clinical skills of physiatrists. To support this goal, he oversees the organization of annual workshops on repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and ultrasound-guided spinal injections. Through these initiatives, he aims to strengthen the role of physiatrists in neurorehabilitation and pain management.
Prof Yang-Soo Lee

Yang-Soo Lee, MD, has been interested in gait training since becoming a board-certified physiatrist in 1994. He has developed innovative gait training strategies and obtained multiple patents related to gait training in both South Korea and the United States. Recognizing that a compensatory approach may lead to suboptimal outcomes, he emphasizes the importance of a restorative approach. He asserts that effective restorative gait training requires the prevention of learned nonuse, the forced use of the affected body, and progressive training. Dr. Lee authored Gait Training in Stroke Patients (Chungnyuneisa, South Korea) in 2012 and Task-Oriented Gait Training (Springer, Singapore) in 2024. Two of his patents were licensed out and merged, earning certification as a New Excellent Health Technology from the Government of South Korea in 2013. In 2022, he led an educational course on Task-Oriented Gait Training at Physiatry 2022 in New Orleans, hosted by the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Prof Yohei Otaka received his MD from Keio University School of Medicine in 1997. He completed a residency in Rehabilitation Medicine at Keio University Hospital. In 2019, he was appointed as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Fujita Health University. He was also appointed as the hospital director of Fujita Health University Nanakuri Memorial hospital in 2024. Prof Yohei Otaka’s clinical and research interests are in the areas of stroke rehabilitation, robotics, fall prevention, community-based rehabilitation, and dementia. In particular, he focuses on the use of exercise/activity as a treatment, and on the use of technologies in rehabilitation medicine. Prof Yu-Cheng Pei

Dr. Pei’s research focuses on understanding how tactile features, such as tactile orientation or motion, are represented in the primary somatosensory cortex. Using rodent and primate models, his team characterizes the neural codes underlying the non-linear processing of tactile features as the information ascends along the processing hierarchies. This understanding is further applied in the development of rehabilitation robots which have been approved by FDA and applied clinically for patients with neurological disorders.

Assoc Prof Yuki Uchiyama graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in 2007 and have been practicing as a physiatrist since 2009. He obtained Board Certified Member/Instructor of the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine (JARM) in 2013. He received Ph.D. from Graduate School of Medicine, Hyogo College of Medicine in 2018. He was appointed as Associate Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, School of Medicine, Hyogo Medical University of Medicine from 2022. Now he is mainly engaged in clinical and research activities related to stroke. His research interests are mainly in the field of neurorehabilitation with the background in motor learning theory.
