The University Malaya's visionary leaders shaped Dato’ Prof. Dr. Zaliha Omar's Rehabilitation Medicine career to provide holistic patient care. Twenty-five years of academic capacity building began in 1980 - a handful of allied health professionals and a rapidly increasing number of patients. It focused on an inter-multi-transdisciplinary approach, condition-specific rehabilitation, and technology. In preparation for the Commonwealth Games 1998, the Master of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation postgraduate training was started, and a team served in the games. In 1997, the new Master of Rehabilitation Medicine engaged in international collaboration; Malaysians can now access nationwide rehabilitation medicine services. After retirement from University Malaya in 2005, she served nationally in the National Specialist Registry, interministerial work for rehabilitation, people with disabilities, and the older population; internationally through ISPRM, Asia Dysphagia Society, ARMA, ACRM, AAP, etc. Lifelong education has helped she earn the DMR (RCP Lond), AFFARM, FRCP (Glasg), and FAMM and she is doing a PhD from Fujita Health University Japan. Her passions are leadership in Medicine, community, Nature-based, and Geriatric rehabilitation. In 2024, she was accorded the International Council for Caring Communities Humanities Award and the Herman Flax Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr Saitoh is a board-certified physiatrist, Professor of Fujita Health University, Supreme advisor of Fujita Academy, Aichi, Japan. He also holds adjunct/visiting professorships at several universities, including Johns Hopkins University (USA), University of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (China), China Medical University (China), and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (Japan). He was selected as an international member of National Academy of Medicine (USA, 2020) and a recipient of China High-end Foreign Experts Program (China, 2015). He chaired the 13rd World Congress of International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM, Kobe, 2019) and chaired as the National representative, the 2nd World Dysphagia Summit (WDS, Nagoya, 2021). Recently he established the Asian Dysphagia Society as the chairperson (2023). His research areas are dysphagia, activity assistive technologies (including robotics, orthosis, smart home, activity monitoring, etc), motion analysis, locomotion, exercise science, and psychology.

Professor Han earned his PhD from Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. He is a certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist in Taiwan. He is now the director of Taiwan Osteoporosis Association, Taiwan Society of Neurorehabilitation, and Taiwan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is also active in the international academic societies. He is a member of the Education Committee and of the Special Interest Group on Geriatric Rehabilitation, International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. His research interests are on muscle biology, sarcopenia, exercise and fitness, molecular biology, and geriatric rehabilitation. He has published over 110 research articles in the related fields.

Prof Fary Khan is a Specialist in Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, and the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Clinical Director, Australian Rehabilitation Research Centre; Clinical Professor, Department of Medicine at University of Melbourne and the Nossal Institute of Global Health, and the PeterMac Centre Melbourne . She is an elected International Member for the USA Academy of Medicine for her contribution to Rehabilitation Medicine and Research. She was awarded the Member for the Order of Australia (2022) for significant contribution to Rehabilitation Medicine and Research. She is awarded the George Burniston Oration and Medal of the RACP in May 2024 for development and services to Rehabilitation Medicine. She is also the recipient of the Ollie Hook Oration Award at the ISPRM ASM 2024 for her work in Cancer Rehabilitation. She is the elected Board Member of the Rehabilitation Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (RMSANZ) and Executive Committee Member for the Bi-National Rehabilitation Strategy for Australia and New Zealand. She is immediate past Inaugural Academic Fellow to the Board of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM)-RACP.

Dr. Mary Elizabeth S. Nelson-Biersach is a doctoral-prepared nurse and ME Global Health Rehabilitation Consulting President. A nurse practitioner-clinician with over 20 years of experience in academic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, she is currently an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA. She has expertise in Systems of Care, interdisciplinary team approaches to care, and global health implementation of retiabilitation team education. As a member of the WHO's World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA) research workstream, and member of multiple technical and advisory groups, she is actively involved in the implementation of the WHO's Rehabilitation 2030 agenda. Dr. Nelson also serves as· Vice President of the International Rehabilitation Forum (IRF), working towards development of PM&R practices in low-resource and isolated regions. Collaborating with a global network of rehabilitation experts she focuses on workforce development, research agendqs, care and practice standards, and priority setting.
